Course Description

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) technology is rapidly becoming the de facto tool for geospatial data analysis and decision support system for managers and policy makers. The technology is currently being used in many areas including conservation, emergency management, environmental analysis, crime prevention forest management, land information management, medicine, commerce, and many more. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) uses GIS to help users visually explore data from EPA¿s Toxic Release Inventory. TOXMAP allows users to overlay national regional and local area maps showing TRI chemicals release on-site into air, water and ground. For users to understand and use TOXMAP effectively, they need to develop skills in Geographic Information System (GIS). In this course, participants will be trained to develop skills to capture and process data at the local level to support hazardous waste identification, classification and management.
