Course Description

The purpose of this three-day course is to prepare officers and command level staff to respond appropriately to public information requests from the media, as well as to develop skills essential to the duties of a public information officer. This course will cover topics to include: the relationship between the police and the media; what the media looks like in today's environment; the value of good police/media relations; bridging the gap between police and the media; attributes of an effective PIO; elements of communication; crisis communications; handling interviews; developing press briefings and press conferences; handling rumors and negative press.
