Course Description

This training provides information about the legal principles and requirements related to establishing paternity. By the end of this training, participants will be able to (1) determine if a legal relationship exists between the putative father and child; (2) explain the presumption of paternity; (3) describe how a common-law marriage affects paternity processing; (4) explain paternity as it relates to support cases for children born out of marriage; (5) explain birth certificates in relation to paternity processing; and (6) explain considerations necessary at the case intake level when assessing paternity issues including: (a) entering paternity information on the Case Intake (CINT) screen in PACSES; (b) processing IV-A referrals; (c) establishing paternity when the putative father is a military service member; and (d) establishing paternity in same sex relationships. Training will be assessed through participation in self-assessment.
