Course Description

Our country has recently been ravaged by deeply concerning issues that have contributed to a sharp increase in mental health issues in children and young adults; more than we’ve seen in our lifetime. Teachers and therapeutic practitioners are feeling overwhelmed and unprepared to manage issues resulting from trauma with regard to social, emotional, and academic problems. To address these pressing concerns, the Penn State Berks Elementary and Early Childhood Education Program is hosting a day-long seminar offered in person and online on trauma.
Speakers in the morning will present on foundational aspects of trauma establishing “what we know” about trauma, characteristics of trauma in children, issues involving working with children affected by trauma, the role of exceptionality and diversity in children of trauma, teachers’ perspectives, and classroom strategies to support children of trauma.
The afternoon portion will feature trauma-informed approaches defined by PDE to build positive learning environments, methods to alleviate the deleterious effects of trauma and stress on academic achievement, social and emotional well-being offered by a licensed clinical psychologist, and finally models for implementation in schools that consider trauma-informed-practices.
If you are a teacher, social worker, school psychologist, service provider, or administrator who works with children and young adults in any way, you will find this day valuable and are encouraged to join us.
