Course Description

A competitive engineering program for youth to explore the rail transportation industry. With guidance from Penn State and outside university faculty, the student will learn about track and structures, global railway equipment and the operations of a rail system, including communication and control systems. The class will offer hands on design with both online and residential activities. The course will offer a virtual as well as in person on campus activities. Possible tour of regional locations will be included. Guidance for college preparation and introduction to the college admission process will be provided.  
Topics to be explored are : Modern railroad track and structure, explore railway equipment around the globe, review and analyze the latest operations and communication/control systems, compare rail to other modes of transportation, investigate the energy efficiency of rail transportation and how to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Course will be a hybrid of online and residential learning.

Tracks to the Future is a hybrid camp. June 10-11, 2024, the camp sessions will be offered via zoom. June 12 is scheduled as a travel day on your own. June 13-14 camp session are in-person at the Penn State Altoona campus.
