ENGR 5112 - Manufacturing & Digital Fundamentals
Course Description
This program is designed for individuals with little to no experience in manufacturing who are looking to start a new career or to advance their skills in manufacturing. You will receive fundamental learning on traditional manufacturing and an overview on Digital/Smart Manufacturing (D/SM) concepts and career opportunities, innovation/entrepreneurial thinking principles and personal professional development. Main focus areas will be on the basics of what manufacturing is, computer-aided design and simulation systems used in manufacturing, introduction to industrial robotics, and SMART manufacturing principles. Personal development topics will be embedded within the technical training to enrich students on essential professional development skills including collaboration/teamwork, problem solving/critical thinking, decision making, conflict resolution, communication in the digital workplace and developing a professional persona. You will be developing your unique professional persona, a professional social media account (via LinkedIn), creation of your resume and cover letters, and interviewing guidelines and practice through mock interviews. Class consists of a mix of presentations, hands-on learning labs and technology demonstrations.
• BASICS OF MANUFACTURING: Introduces what manufacturing is, including history, Industry 4.0 (the future of manufacturing) and career opportunities. Other sections cover blueprint reading, measurement, hand/power tools, basic math fundamentals, product development, design for manufacturing and assembly, computer-aided systems in design/development of products, CNC simulation, computer-aided manufacturing.
• SAFETY, QUALITY, TYPES of MANUFACTURING & INDUSTRIAL ROBOTICS: Covers industrial safety in manufacturing, quality concepts and lean manufacturing principles, basic project management, subtractive manufacturing, and introduction to industrial robotics.
• SMART/DIGITAL MANUFACTURING BUILDING BLOCKS: Covers 3D printing and additive manufacturing concepts, automation systems such as sensors, actuators & Internet of Things, industrial computers & interfaces such as PLCs & HMIs, systems integration in SMART manufacturing and the power/impact of data in manufacturing.
• DEVELOPING YOUR PROFESSIONAL SKILLS: Introduces what it means to have a professional persona, professional social media presence and how to set-one up, how to write impactful resumes and cover letters, how to interview and practice through mock-interviews and setting personal career goals.
Fee: $2200.00/person. FREE for individuals that qualify for funding assistance. You must contact your CareerLink by 7/30/2025 to set up an individual training account (ITA) and complete the necessary evaluation review successfully to confirm if you qualify. Dates: Tuesday, September 30th – Thursday, November 20th, 2025
Frequency: Every Tuesday and Thursday starting on 09/30/2025 and finishing on Thursday 11/20/2025; There will be a 3 hour Saturday session on 11/15/2025.
Hours: 5:45pm to 8:15pm
- Includes meals (dinner) and beverages.
