Course Description
This program is designed for employed workers with a background/education in manufacturing such as plant workers, plant supervisors, machinists, fabricators, equipment operators, engineers and technicians in the manufacturing field. Designed for individuals with practical and applied experience in manufacturing, this course will enhance their knowledge in digital/smart manufacturing (D/SM) technologies and processes to augment their overall skills in manufacturing and inform them about the steps and processes to transform their manufacturing operations into a Smart Manufacturing. Essential concepts of D/SM from product/process design to operational management in manufacturing will be introduced through lectures, demonstrations, and lab exercises. Topic areas covered include sensing & data collection, machine-to-device and machine-to-machine communication, programmable logic controller (PLC) basics, overview of supervisory control and data acquisition (SCADA) and human machine interface (HMI), industrial robotics integration in automaton, physical and vision-based automation systems, business case development for automation projects, digital control systems and modeling, data analytics, visualization and data management, LEAN principles and applications in smart manufacturing, manufacturing execution systems (MES), enterprise resource planning (ERP), professional communications in smart factories, project management in manufacturing, change management concepts and how to architect a smart manufacturing transformation.
